How we raise our Shortie Family
|
Life at Brightjacks' is all about Entertaining, Spoiling, and just having Fun with our Shorties. After many years of breeding and being driven to parent each of my shorties equally. I have since downsized to a more comfortable number of females, so they are able to live with us in our home full time. Even though our shorties have always had free roam of our home and kennel throughout the day. Some were kenneled at night. It was not enough for me. I wanted them at my side day and night. After all, they are my children.
As much as I would love to also have my intact males living inside with me, I cannot allow them full time due to obvious marking their territory. With intact females living in the house, males cannot resist the urge to leave their scent to keep the females interested. I am not at all happy with this, but I have learned to deal with it. I just make sure that each male gets lots of extra hugs and kisses with frequent grooming and pampering when in the house to keep their little minds busy on me, not the girls. They love their baths and enjoy the treats while on the grooming table.

I could write a book like no other Love Story. We are the Exception to the RULE' Water and Oil don’t mix. Our lives together began April Fools night 1983. We had to overcome many hurdles, both recuperating from divorce. Starting our lives over again with a ready made family. We had Hopes, Dreams, Once in a Lifetime True Love and So Much Respect for each other. We truly are Exception to the Rule!

Appaloosa Horses and Shortie Jack Russell Terriers have been our way of life for many years. Now that our children are all grown and our grandchildren have children of their own. Shortie's have become our four legged children. We have many treasured memories of riding and raising Appaloosas Horses and serving 10 years as volunteers with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Mounted Possee Shortie's soon became our constant companions at the farm and we grew to love this breed so much that I decided to start a breeding program to raise healthy well socialized puppies for families to experience the love that these little Bundles of Joy have brought to our lives. My Love for Shortie Jack Russell Terriers gives me reason to get up every morning to be the best parent that I can be.

Breeding is a serious responsibility and one that I have never taken lightly
Working in the Veterinarian field for many years allowed me to experience many aspects of the breeding world. I worked with both large and small animal reproduction. In 1992, we added our first Shortie Jack to our family. A male named BJ that we adopted from a local family. We also adopted a female that same year named Brighton. We raised a few litters, mostly for our own enjoyment, then placing a few with family and friends.
In 1997, we had overwhelmingly experienced the joy that these fine little companions had brought into our lives. So I made the decision to look for shorties with better documented histories so that I could start a more serious breeding program with lines of consistent quality. We had just started with a new farrier for our horses and much to our surprise he raised Shortie Jacks. I purchased a female named Boutie from our farrier.
In 2000, I purchased Buelah and then Biscuit and his sister Bailey in 2001 from a local breeder. I decided to work together with this breeder because I could see great quality in many of his shorties. Buelah, Biscuit far surpassed my expectations in both temperament and Quality. Buelah and Biscuits dam is from the well known Foxwarren bloodlines. Their sire is totally shortie bred. This breeder had been raising shorties for more than 37 years at that time, most just for his own pleasure and for placement with local families. I was able to personally put my hands on 4 generations of what I felt were excellent representatives of the shortie breed. Together we selected parents that I felt could continue to improve his lines by doing some selective line breeding.
In 2003, we produced Brenah and Bandit which were born here at Brightjacks. We also produced and retained Betti Bop and Braelia which soon followed in their footsteps of producing Top Quality Shortie's. I could not have ask for a better group of shortie's. I also purchased a female from a family in Georgia named Brandy, that went back to some of these same lines. She was a daughter of a female that I had placed with this same family a few years earlier.
I acquired Bella and Reanah from Butterball Farm, Emie, Katie, Allie and Janah from Russellville Jacks. I produced and retained Elianah daughter of Emie and Biscuit which has been such a pleasure to have in our family. She could easily win Entertainer of the Year. All have matured to become excellent representatives of the breed and have produced many Top Quality Shortie's. And to this Day I am still dedicated to reach beyond my goals to produce myvision of that perfect shortie with my preferred conformation.
I Make No Claims to Be A Perfect Breeder - But! I Do My Very Best. I believe in Honesty, Integrity and Dedication to work hard towards raising shortie's with goals that I feel, are as near Perfection as possible. My faith and my experience has given me the tools to be confident in following my dreams, my heart and to continue to reach for my goals.
